Top 100 rap Songs in Our lifetimes
The top 100 rap songs in our lifetime should be based on a solid criterion that can definitely stand the test of time. Rappers come and go but if their song’s message has become a sort of anthem for that generation, then they deserve a slot in the top 100 rap songs list, (even if they were only a 1 hit wonder).
To choose the following songs, they must be weighed in terms of influence, impact on society, quality of lyrics, lasting popularity and overall mass appeal. These days, there are a lot of heavy hitters in the rap game but before mentioning the more familiar ones, let us do a backtrack and do a shout out to the og’s who set the path of rap.
First one we got to mention is Kurtis Blow. The first rapper to ever become a commercial hit, his famous single “The Breaks” was the first ever certified gold rap song. Talk about pioneering, he is also responsible for other famous hip hop head the likes of The Fat Boyz and Run Dmc, who I should ad also has a guaranteed spot in the top 100 rap song list. Their classic jams “It’s Like That”, with the MTV that featured b -boys and b- girls and “Walk this Way” featuring Aerosmith have crossed countless borders and even joined two rocking genres in 1. Other mentioanbles are Grandmaster Flash’s “The Message”, KRS-1’s “You Must Learn”, Sugar Hill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight”, A Tribe Called Quest’s “Can I Kick It?”, Warren G’s ‘Regulate” and Wu Tang Clan’s “Protect ya Neck”.
As Hip Hop evolved, we could see a change in the way the new hits were being mass produced but Common Sense’s classic hit, “I Used to Love H.E.R” ( which stood for Hearing Every Rhyme) just brings us back to the essence of Rhyme and Poetry by comparing rap to a girl he once loved. Nowadays, a lot of artists have come out but tried and tested rappers like Hova himself, Jay Z with his “Empire State of Mind”, Gang Starrs’ “Billz” and Nas’ “It Ain’t Hard to tell” are the ones that will always have their deserved ranking in the list. Kanye West I’m still on the fence about not knowing what his real motives are in this game. He was good when he first started but now, he’s gone berserk with fame.
Many more songs I haven’t mentioned but in this industry where there’s always a new artist on the come up, we got to be ready for what’s to come.
